152 DTG prints for the documentary ‘7 Years, 90 Minutes’

‘7 Years, 90 Minutes’ is a documentary about what the 2014 World Cup did to its host country, Brazil, the public, the officials, the politics, the dream of winning. Its makers, Alain Garibi and Iker San Martin of Red Trigger, wanted the film’s artwork on hoodies, T-shirts and vests for the launch. The artwork was the problem.

Printed garments for the documentary 7 Years, 90 Minutes

The brief

Red Trigger found us online and, in their words, found us to be the only company that could do what they needed: a full-colour, highly detailed design printed onto a mix of garments, hoodies, T-shirts and vests, white and coloured, 152 prints in all, delivered for a launch event within two weeks.

What we did

With 152 identical prints our first instinct was screen printing, which has the best economy of scale on a run that size and the most consistent print. But the design was a high-resolution JPG rather than a vector, and far too complex to separate into colours, every colour would have needed its own screen and set-up.

So we recommended direct-to-garment printing instead. As Leandro from our team put it when he saw the artwork, it had lots of small details that would have been impossible to get right with screen printing. The client agreed, the small details were the point, and DTG reproduced them in full colour on every garment.

The result

The garments were dispatched with time to spare before the launch. The launch, the print and the documentary were all a success.

The film

The documentary sets the different views of Brazilian society against each other before and during the World Cup, with first-hand accounts from the public, from officials involved and from government workers: the social and economic problems, the political corruption, and the dream of winning it.

Garments for a film like that are not merchandise. They are how a small team gets a title in front of people who have not heard of it.

“The Garment Printing team has offered excellent care and assistance on the design of the T-Shirts. The technique which was recommended (digital printing) was the most appropriate due to the complexity of the design. We’re very happy with the result and the end product.”
